Keeping Your Pets Safe in a New Zealand Summer

New Zealand summers bring long sunny days, beautiful beaches, and BBQ weather. But for our pets, the heat can be dangerous if we are not prepared. Here is how to keep your furry friends safe and comfortable through the warmer months.
1. Hydration Is Everything
Always ensure your pets have access to fresh, cool water. On hot days, add ice cubes to their water bowls and place multiple water stations around the house and garden. Dogs can lose water quickly through panting, and cats often do not drink enough on their own.
2. Avoid Hot Pavements
A common mistake Kiwi pet owners make is walking dogs during the hottest part of the day. In NZ, concrete and asphalt can reach 60 degrees Celsius in direct sun. Test the ground with the back of your hand — if you cannot hold it there for 5 seconds, it is too hot for paws. Walk early morning or after 6pm instead.
3. Never Leave Pets in Cars
Even with windows cracked, a car can reach lethal temperatures in minutes. In NZ, you can call the SPCA on 0800 4 SPCA (0800 477 227) if you see an animal in distress in a hot car.
4. Sunburn Protection
Yes, pets can get sunburnt! Light-coloured dogs and cats, and those with thin fur or pink noses, are especially vulnerable under NZ’s strong UV rays. Use pet-safe sunscreen on exposed areas like ears, nose, and belly.
5. Watch for Signs of Heatstroke
Excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting, and uncoordinated movement are all signs of heatstroke. If you suspect it, move your pet to shade, apply cool (not cold) water, and contact your vet immediately.
