New Zealand is a dog walker’s paradise. With stunning coastlines, native bush trails, and wide-open parks, there is no shortage of amazing places to explore with your four-legged friend. Here are some of the best walks across the country.
Auckland: Long Bay Regional Park
A beautiful coastal walk on the North Shore with dedicated off-leash areas. The beach section is dog-friendly and perfect for a splash after the walk. The loop track takes about 45 minutes and offers stunning views of the Hauraki Gulf.
Wellington: Red Rocks Reserve
A rugged coastal walk past the famous seal colony. Dogs must be on-leash near the seals, but there are off-leash areas along the way. The wild south coast scenery is spectacular, and it is a favourite among Wellington dog owners.
Christchurch: Bottle Lake Forest
A massive pine forest with kilometres of trails. Dogs can roam off-leash in designated areas, and the flat terrain makes it suitable for all fitness levels. Great for hot days as the forest provides plenty of shade.
Hamilton: Waikato River Trails
Flat, scenic trails along the Waikato River passing through Hamilton Gardens and beyond. Dogs on-leash are welcome, and there are plenty of spots to stop for a drink by the river.
Tauranga: Papamoa Hills Regional Park
Elevated trails with panoramic views of the Bay of Plenty coastline. Dogs on-leash are welcome, and the walk rewards you with incredible 360-degree views from the summit.
Dunedin: Tunnel Beach
A dramatic coastal walk leading to a secluded beach through a hand-carved tunnel. Dogs on-leash are welcome and the scenery is unlike anywhere else in NZ. Best visited at low tide.
